Just like the bottom grid, instantiate GridCells as sparsely as
possible: only create a cell if it would have at least one
non-null kidCell. Many GridCells will be null, so we save a lot
of memory by only instantiating as needed instead of just
creating the entire dense grid as a 3D array. Moreover, many
algorithms depend on the sparseness property: for example, the
split position assignments in buildSplitCells.

Each GridCell is bounded on four sides (min/max, X/Y) by
movable lines. The naive thing to do would be to simply store these positions in absolute coordinates in two arrays (one for X, one for Y). Although that would allow O(constant) lookup, it could require O(n) update time for typical navigation activity. When the user wants to expand one cell, the absolute position of many or all of the other cells might need to change.
Instead, we need to store them hierarchically with *relative* positions: each of these lines corresponds to the "split position" for a GridCell at some higher level in the quadtree hierarchy. These relative split positions are stored in the cell coordinate system, ranging from 0.0 on one side to 1.0 on the other. With this approach it will never take more than O(log n) time to update. We accept the penalty that lookup will also take O(log n) time. We already have a hierarchical structure lying around: the GridCell quadtree itself. We thus store four pointers, one for each line, each to a GridCell further up in the hierarchy whose split corresponds to the boundary of this particular cell.
The actual storage is still in two arrays, splits[][], but these arrays contain relative values and they
are accessed through a splitIndex
field in each cell (again, for each of the four lines).
There are many cells that share the same split. For example,
all the cells in the same row and same level share the same
minimum and maximum Y values. All these cells should have the
same splitIndex[Y] value. For each row/level or column/level
combination, we find the first non-null cell, assign it the
next index number, and use that number for all the other cells
in that category.
The total number of splits that we need to store for each direction is exactly the size of the bottom level 0 grid cell array in that direction. All higher level cells share boundary lines with some level 0 cell. We also need two more splits in each direction: one each for special minimum and maximum values.
We need to handle cells on the periphery as a special degenerate case, with a split that's "stuck" to the edge. We make sure we have such empty cells all the way around the outside, so that there's a clean way to handle all selection and motion using the split of a cell whether or not we're at a boundary. We allocate an extra two split array element for this min and max case.
